Fund raising

Ceiriog Valley people have put their money where their hearts are. Almost £2,000 has been raised to run the ‘No turbines’ campaign, most of it in the form of donations by those who attended the two public meetings at the Oliver Jones Memorial Hall, Dolywern on June 26th  and July 3rd.

The four main fundraising events we have staged have collectively raised £547.80  - an excellent effort which says much about public opinion against turbines in the Ceiriog Valley. Sincere thanks to all who either took part or contributed.

The fundraising is continuing, as we hope will your fantastic support.

The lucky winners of the water colour are Jack and Agnes Roberts!

The draw for the water colour was taken in the Golden Pheasant following the Wrexham Council meeting on 9th September.

Well done to Jack and Agnes - a well deserved reward for your support and commitment to the campaign.

Thanks to everyone who bought tickets - raising the grand sum of £665 for campaign funds.

Win a water colour painting!

Tregeiriog professional artist Colin Radcliffe has painted a watercolour of a classic Ceiriog Valley view - featuring Pontfadog church and school. The picture, measuring 21" x 15" framed, is being raffled at £5 per strip of 5 tickets. It is a superb painting – so please, buy a strip if you can.

Signed book offer!

In 1986 Helen Krasner set out to fulfill a longheld ambition by walking round the entire coast of Britain.  She claimed that "it was more of an amble than a ramble", but nevertheless found herself battling gales, rain, snow, bulls, fierce dogs; plus footpaths which suddenly disappeared and rivers with no ferries or bridges.  Despite frequently getting lost, since just keeping the sea on the left didn't always work and her map reading was far from perfect, she managed to arrive back at her starting point eleven months and nearly 5,000 miles later.  She was somewhat stunned to find herself a minor celebrity with an entry in The Guinness Book of Records.

Midges, Maps & Muesli is a lighthearted personal account of Helen's memorable long distance stroll, also providing an insight into the different areas and people of the whole of Britain in the days before wind turbines.

Helen has kindly donated a number of copies for CVAG fund raising. Buy a signed copy for £5 (cover price £6.99) via any of the contacts or at the Upper Mills Trout Farm Open Day on 26th August where Helen will attend and sign personal copies.

When this campaign is over, any residual finance will be devoted to the CVAG’s declared aim of seeking to have the Ceiriog Valley designated as an area of recognised natural beauty…thereby ensuring that this campaign never has to be repeated.

Your ideas and offers for fundraising events, projects and help will be very welcome, but in the meantime, your cash, cheques and donations are very much needed.

We are also receiving pledges of large amounts of money, should the campaign require sustained funding. So please - dig deep into your pockets and help us continue this superb start that we have made.

Turbine Trek 1 & Turbine Trek 11

Following the success of  ‘Turbine Trek’, a sponsored five-mile walk on July 6 from Dolywern to include the site of the proposed 300ft high wind turbines at Cefn Coed, Glyn Ceiriog,  a second sponsored walk – ‘Turbine Trek II’ – was organised, by popular demand, July 25. The two treks, which were led by Bryn Hughes, Ceiriog Holidays, raised over £200.

“It was not an attempt to do a ‘hard sell’ on anyone” said Merle Hunt. “People simply came along for an enjoyable evening’s walk in glorious countryside whilst seeing for themselves the proposed site of the turbines. This was a very positive way of  giving people an opportunity to make up their minds about how obtrusive or not they think wind turbines would be in the Valley. We went in the Golden Pheasant for a chat and a beer afterwards – it was all very civilised and sociable, unlike the very negative and destructive so-called  pro turbine campaign''

The extent of opposition to the proposal is clearly widespread. These were some of the individual protests being made by farmers immediately surrounding the proposed site at Cefn Coed.

SPONSORED RAFT RACE

A sponsored raft race on the River Dee at Llangollen, in which teams from local pubs and from Pontfadog school competed, raised more than £250 of which £60 alone was raised by the children from Pontfadog. The Raft Race, supported by JJ Raft & Canoe of Llangollen, who made the inflatable rafts, equipment and instructors available free of charge to the campaign, was “a fantastic experience” said Merle Hunt, Ceiriog Valley Action Group Fundraiser and Treasurer . “We had competitors aged from 10 to 50-plus, in teams of six, and they had the time of their lives. The Pontfadog children were especially up for it – they even wrote their own team song!”
