Money comes rolling in to

support fight against turbines

THE FIGHT by Ceiriog Valley residents to stop one of North Wales’ most scenic beauty spots being wrecked by Britain’s biggest wind turbines, was boosted this week as more money from a series of fund-raising events came rolling in .

Campaign funds which hit the four-figure mark at a packed public meeting on July 3 attended by more than 500 people, have been further swelled by the proceeds of a sponsored raft race on the River Dee at Llangollen in which teams from local pubs and from Pontfadog school competed.

The raft race raised more than £200, of which £60 alone was raised by the children from Pontfadog.  Following the success of  ‘Turbine Trek’, a sponsored five-mile walk on July 6 from Dolywern to the site of the proposed 300ft high wind turbines at Cefn Coed, Glyn Ceiriog,  a second sponsored walk – ‘Turbine Trek II’ – will now go ahead on Thursday July 25 (6.30pm).

Starting from the Oliver Jones Memorial Hall at Dolywern, allcomers are welcome – including those who have yet to form an opinion on the turbines debacle.

“We won’t attempt to do a ‘hard sell’ on anyone” said Ceiriog Valley Action Group Fundraiser and Treasurer Merle Hunt. “People can simply come along for an enjoyable evening’s walk in glorious countryside, see the proposed site of the turbines, and make up their own minds how obtrusive or not they think they would be in the Valley. We’ll finish up in the Golden Pheasant for a chat and a beer afterwards – it will all be very sociable!”

The Raft Race, supported by JJ Raft & Canoe of Llangollen who made the inflatable rafts, equipment and instructors available free of charge to the campaign, was “a fantastic experience” said Merle Hunt.

“We had competitors aged from 10 to 50-plus, in teams of six, and they had the time of their lives. The Pontfadog children were especially up for it – they even wrote their own team song!”

Full information about the fight against the wind turbines proposals by local farmer Gareth Roberts/National Wind Power is contained on the Ceiriog Valley Action Group website, whose address is www.cvag.campaign.btinternet.co.uk.

Now that Wrexham County Borough Council’s deadline for the receipt of formal objections to the turbine proposals has passed, Ceiriog Valley Action Group is turning its attention to efforts to lobby politicians at all levels, including Wrexham County Borough councillors who will ultimately decide on the application at a meeting on September 9.

Among some 700 formal letters of objection already received by the Council, are those from Clwyd South MP Martyn Jones, National Assembly member Karen Sinclair, the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales, and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
